Art Journals and Creative Healing, Sharon Soneff -- I curled up in bed with this book last night fully expecting to simply skim through it to pick up a little creative inspiration before I drifted off to sleep. It's a visually exciting book, filled with page after creative page of personal art journals -- mini books that combine traditional scrapbooking items like papers, tags, ribbons and flowers with paint, fabric and vintage items.
I've seen a lot of mini books and altered journals, but the ideas presented in this book are truly exceptional. Yes, each example is every bit the eye candy you would expect in a paper crafts publication, but more than that, each was an amazing expression of the artist's heart and soul poured out in journal form as she grappled with a life issue or personal challenge.
What started out to be a 15 minute search for creative inspiration turned into over an hour of reading every single story from twenty five contributors and the author. I found myself turning the book this way and that, straining to read the journaling on the pages of their art. I was completely drawn into their lives, their struggles, fears, and victories. Dealing with issues that are on every woman's mind -- fitness, aging, parenting -- as well as the more serious, often-private struggles of our lives such as depression, abuse, and disease, the artists revealed themselves to us, the readers, through their words and art.
I was completely captivated and moved by their stories and by how they used these art journals as vehicles of healing. I also felt empowered and validated, as though I was suddenly given permission to explore my own challenges honestly and fearlessly and express them in a more creative way.
Whether you're looking for fresh inspiration for your own creative projects or struggling with how to capture the less-than-joyful moments of your life, Art Journals and Creative Healing is a book you will want on your bookshelf. I promise that you will find yourself turning to this book over and over again.

I love me a good book, and seeing as how I'll be flying next week, I think I've found the book I need to order!!
